2022 AGM Reports

CEO’s Report—Year ending 30th June 2022

In writing this report I would like to firstly express my appreciation for the support of my fellow members of the Committee of Management—Barrie Ryan (Chairman), John Tibble (Secretary/Treasurer) and recently Don Belcher (Committee Member). Under this committee’s direction The Murle Education Foundation Inc. (MEF) has had another successful year.

Due to restrictions on travel imposed because of Covid-19 during 2021 and the early part of 2022, I was not able to travel to Kenya as in previous years.
However, when international boarders opened, on March 15
th I flew to Kenya where I met with the students who are sponsored by MEF.

I was very pleased to meet the students, and also to catch up with two of my own children (who are not sponsored by MEF)—my son Nganilang and daughter Miro who have both been at school in Kenya. The school terms in Kenya were seriously disrupted by the Covid pandemic, but are now back to normal.

The sponsored students are doing well. One of them, Nuur Stephen, together with my son Nganilang, sat and passed the Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). Nuur is now in Form 2 and Nganilang has returned to Australia.

In January 2022 four sponsored students, plus my daughter Miro, sat the KCPE exam and all passed successfully. Following are the names and performance marks of the four sponsored students:
Ajus Kaka 356 Joseph Kolen 326 JoyiArani324 Abel Koli317.

These four students have found places in their selected high schools and are currently undergoing studies there.

Two students in primary school, one in class six and one in class seven, have yet to sit their exams. In addition to the two primary level students, there are ten studying at secondary level, and four at college—sixteen sponsored students in total.

Three secondary students will graduate to college at the start of 2023, which will increase the number of college students to seven.

Peter Kaka

Chief Executive Officer

Chairman’s Report—Year ending 30th June 2022

It is with pleasure that I submit this report on the activities of The Murle Education Foundation Inc. (MEF) for the financial year 2021-2022.

Toward the end of the year we were pleased to welcome a new member to the Board of Management, Mr Donald Belcher, a retired accountant who brings skills and wisdom to the Board. The members of the Board are currently:

Barrie Ryan (Chair), Peter Kaka (CEO), John Tibble (Secretary/Treasurer) and Don Belcher.

The easing of covid restrictions enabled our CEO Mr Peter Kaka to visit Africa where the students we support attend various schools in the town of Kitale in Kenya. (The CEO has submitted a separate report giving details of his trip and of the students.)

Peter is a most suitable person to represent the interests of MEF in Africa as he speaks four languages (Murle, Arabic, Swahili and English) as well as having an MBA degree. He is totally committed to improving the circumstances of refugee young people—particularly those of his own tribe, the Murle people.

The students supported by MEF are all from the United Nations refugee camp at Kakuma in Kenya. Because the schools at Kitale are at a considerable distance from Kakuma, the students have to be transported from the camp to Kitale and boarded near their relevant schools. For this reason very young children cannot be included. They need to remain with their parents in the camp until they reach 5th class, and then, if chosen are included in the sponsorship program.

It is the aim of MEF to establish a school in the Pibor region of South Sudan. This of course will be a big expense, and we are currently researching ways to make the mission self-funded by setting up profitable enterprises in Africa.

In the interim we still need the support of donors in Australia, and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board to express heart-felt thanks to our loyal supporters. Without you this mission could not function.

Sixteen students are currently being supported, and please be assured that support makes a huge difference to their prospects for a future well above the poverty level.

Peter Kaka will travel to Kenya and South Sudan in December 2022 to investigate possible money-raising prospects, and will report to the Board upon his return early in 2023.

On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to take this opportunity to wish each of our supporter’s good health and prosperity, and we look forward to a continuing association with you in the future.

Treasurer’s Report – Y/E 30 JUN 2022

The accounts submitted with this report show the MEF to be in a good financial position. This is entirely due to the gracious generosity of MOE NEW LIFE CHRISTIAN CENTRE -Op-SHOP, monthly Mission Donations from MNLCC and a consistent group of financial supporters who have donated substantial amounts into the MEF Account.

MEF has not been immune to the many lockdown and business restrictions due to COVID19 that we have experienced during the last two years, but was able to increase our income to meet an increase in the expenses. As with many other charitable organisations, MEF is still to establish a firm and viable support base that is able to generate the Australian Dollar income necessary to meet the MEF obligations for educating the students already under our charge, but, in addition, to be able to fund expansion and growth into the future.

As previously mentioned in last year’s report, apart from Membership Fees, MEF has not, as yet, been able to raise any additional funds, save those mentioned previously.

As we go forward, Fund-raising must be our continuing goal for 2022/2023 and beyond.

I would like to thank Peter Kaka and Barrie Ryan for their support, guidance and direction, in taking THE MURLE EDUCATION FOUNDATION into its seventh year of operation.

The Annual Accounts for the period 01 JULY 2021 to 30 JUNE 2022 are included and part of this report.

Grace’s Graduation

One of our supported students, Grace, has just graduated from her course. She writes, “I am grateful for the immense support I was offered by the organization in the start of my journey in campus pursuing a Diploma course in information and communications technology. I have now come to the completion of my Diploma tenure. Words cannot express how grateful I am, I pray that the Lord Almighty will bless you abundantly in order to continue with the great work that you are doing .”

Here are some photos from the graduation:

Student Reports

Our students are doing well, as shown in these reports. It is such a joy to be able to help these young people to receive an education that will make such a difference to not only their own lives, but also the lives of others around them.

Students During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 restrictions students in Kitale and Kakuma have been studying online. They hire individual tutors to help with specific subjects, and submit their work online when it is complete.
